Rock Climbing at Clark Canyon

Good quality volcanic tuff? That may somewhat of a contradiction, but nevertheless, Clark Canyon is indeed one of the best pocketed playgrounds in the Mammoth area.

Be advised, however, that it is a little tricky getting there, and in certain spots you may need high clearance (a Prius won't make it, but a Subaru Outback will be fine).

From the parking lot (37.7849, -118.91534), head northeast on a faint trail through the scrub brush. At the large boulder, turn left to head to the main area and the Potato Patch, or continue on to Area 13.

The best routes here range from 5.8 to 5.14, but the majority are great 10's and 11's. Be sure to do Wild Wills Arete (5.8 at Area 13), King Spud (5.11b at the Potato Patch), and Maltese Falcon (5.12a at Maltese Falcon Cliff).

Most of the anchors here are cold shuts, so it is recommended practice to use two quickdraws to lower or top rope.

The closest fresh water and restrooms are located on Highway 395, about 0.1 mile south of Owens River Road. If you're planning to stay a couple days, there are some established campsites (37.766266, -118.924641) with bear boxes situated in a meadow approximately 1 mile before the parking lot.
