Meysan Lakes Trail

Meysan Lakes Trail is located on the ever popular Whitney Portal Road. Park on the side of the road next to the Whitney Portal Campground. Start the hike by cutting through the campground, and passing some seasonal cabin style residences. Follow the Meysan Lakes Trail signs. The trail cuts through the gummy warmups and kicks off quick with immediate elevation (3365ft in total). For roughly 4 miles, the trail is riddled with switchbacks, loose sand and gravel, and some steep sections making you work for each step.

At the 4 mile mark you’ll reach Grass Lake. This is a nice lake to take a little rest, but the true gold is waiting for you at the Meysan Lake end. If you have the energy to continue, and I highly recommend you store some up just for what’s to come, tackle the challenging final .6 mile hike up some loose sand/gravel. The trail will be a bit more difficult to follow so keep an eye out for cairns to guide you. Once the trail levels off, soak in the stunning views of Meysan Lake and all the glory surrounding you. This is a great spot to eat some lunch and take it all in before you head out.

In total, this is a 10 mile roundtrip hike that takes you to some jaw-dropper views of pristine alpine lakes offering little to no crowds.

Permits are not required for day use, but are required for overnight. Learn more about permits at fs.usda.gov.
May 1 through November 1 overnight visitors are limited to 10 per day.
