There is a Class 3 Scramble but you will be rewarded with great Views and going off Trail. There is a short Climb and a Little Known Peak with Worthwhile Views and Adventure.
From the Whitney Trail - beyond trail crest - you will see a big cairn (right side). If you make it to the first "window of Mt. Whitney" you have gone too far. The cairn marks the start of an class 2 use trail up to the Mt. Muir headwall.
The headwall is a fun climb with good handholds and has little exposure. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up the headwall traverse on the big slab using the edge on top of the slab (excellent holds). Traversing on the slab will make the next section drastically easier.
You will notice a large boulder secured on both ends towards the top. Stay right! Then mantel up to a solid ledge to the right of the perched boulder. Make the final push up the to the summit block and look for the summit register. No USGS marker as of summer 2015.
