About this place

Added by Aaron Selig

This National Recreation Area is located in the remote southeast corner of Montana and is only accessible through the small town of Lovell, Wyoming. You can have this huge expanse almost entirely to yourself in the winter months.

Bighorn Canyon is a quiet and beautiful National Recreation Area covering parts of Montana and Wyoming. No trip here would be complete without a visit to the iconic Devil's Overlook. It's best to enter through the southern entrance - to get to there, head east on Rd 14a from Lowell, WY. Turn left on Hwy 37 driving north for 9 miles until you reach the entrance. Devil's Overlook, just north of the Horseshoe Bend turnoff, is easily accessed by a well-marked, paved side road just a few miles from the southern entrance. The views from the parking lot are incredible, and even better with a little maneuvering ;)

The great thing about planning your trip to Bighorn Canyon around Devil's Overlook is that most of the 27 miles of hiking trails are also in the southern part of the park. Stop by any one of these stations to pick up a hiking guide:

Also be sure to keep a sharp eye out for the park's namesake, the bighorn sheep, as this rocky terrain is a great habitat for them and they are very good at blending in with their surroundings.
