About this place

Added by Claire Winchester

Isolated. Beautiful scenery. Excellent fishing.

To access the South Fork of the Shoshone River, head west through Cody on Yellowstone Ave/Highway 20. Turn left (south) on South Fork Road and continue until... well, until you can't anymore. The road will travel along the river, through several miles of private property, ranches, etc. Do not make the mistake of stopping and fishing here!

The road will turn to dirt and become bumpy, but a reasonable 2WD vehicle should be able to make it okay. From the turn off to Deer Creek Campground near the end of the South Fork Rd, it's about 40 miles and an hour and a half drive. You can camp at Deer Creek Campground for a fee and drive another two miles up the road to the parking lot that sits right on the river! From there, suit up, grab your rod, and hike up or down the river to fish! There is also kayaking in the area, on Cabin Creek and further up the canyon.

The Shoshone offers a variety of trout, brown to rainbow to cutbow to Yellowstone cutties. The sizes of fish can range from six to 22 inches. Visit the Northfork Anglers fly shop in town to find out more info about the current hatch and to stock up on the necessities.
