Distance: 2 miles round trip. Duration: overnight. Elevation gain: none. A secluded backcountry campsite in Yellowstone. Crystal clear lake. Make sure you get a permit before hand.
The trailhead for Ice Lake starts at a small parking area along the Norris-Canyon Road, at around 8,000 feet elevation.The trail is very flat, with no noticeable elevation gain. This is a very family friendly hike, perfect for kids introduction to backpacking with such a short hike in.
You'll notice a large number of downed older trees, and shorter new trees. These were caused by the wildfires that frequent Yellowstone. It makes for a unique, yet not the most scenic landscape. At 0.7 miles from the trailhead, you'll come to an intersection with a trail that goes to Norris Campground. Here, you'll go right and campsite 4D1 will be a few hundred yards on the right.
This is a backcountry campsite, and therefore requires a backcountry permit. You can get a permit no more than 48 hours beforehand, or you can submit an application to reserve your spot before the season. Snow, mud, and mosquitoes are likely here through mid-June.
