Camp at Shadow Mountain

Whether you're looking for a place to pull in and crash or an area to take in the entire Teton range, you shouldn't pass up the opportunity to experience Shadow Mountain. Although Shadow Mountain is in Bridger-Teton National Forest, the foot of the mountain borders Grand Teton National Park. Forest Rd 30340 is a dirt road that heads east from Shadow Mountain Rd and winds up the side of the mountain. The road is in fairly good condition and should be manageable in most vehicles. Along the road, there are plenty of free areas to pull-in and camp. The majority of these spots overlook Antelope Flats with the Tetons as the backdrop (one of the best views of the Tetons in my opinion). Once your there, all you have to do is choose your spot, set up camp, and enjoy a beverage while watching the sun shift across the range. Be sure to wake up early enough to take in the spectacle of the sunrise as the first light casts on the peaks of the range and slowly moves down to the flats. There is active wildlife in the area so be cautious as always.

Keep in mind, we were here in early Nov. and had the choice of pretty much any camp spot we wanted. However, I can see this area being overcrowded during tourist season. Antelope Flats Rd does close sometime in Nov. through May, so access may be limited during that time. Also, there is supposedly good biking trails in the area, so keep your eyes out.
