Explore the Abandoned Solvay Coke & Gas Complex

To access the complex, head south from downtown Milwaukee along 1st St. Once you reach Greenfield Ave., turn left heading East. You'll pass under a concrete train bridge before seeing an open field on your right. Park your car along the street and head south past the crumbled brick of another former Solvay building. Follow along the train tracks to the West, through shrubbery, weeds and more. Just over a quarter mile of the way you'll begin to see the concrete ruins of where they used to burn coal. Hazardous materials were removed from the site in 2003 by the EPA. What remains are a crumbled concrete shell, two smoke stacks and a garage half burned on the North Side. The ruins feature tons of graffiti and more. Head over here for some cool pics or just to do some urban exploring. You may run into other urban explorers as it can be a popular destination.
