Hike the Gandy Dancer Trail

While visiting the charming Northwoods town of Siren, I detoured for a hike on the Gandy Dancer Trail segment.   This trail was constructed to connect townships using old railroad beds.   Even the name honors the rhythmic, synchronized efforts of the workers in their rail nailing dance.   In total the trail stretches from St. Croix Falls northward 98 miles, nearly to Superior, crossing into Minnesota and back into Wisconsin.

The Veterans Park off Main Street from Hwy 70 in Siren offers parking, picnic tables, and trail access.   It’s marked by the presence of an impressive military tanker.   From there, I headed south to enjoy the fall sun on my face.   Either direction would have been welcome for an out and back stroll.   Beautiful cattails bordered the quiet trail.  There were a few through hikers along the way that shared their agenda to trek the full length over the week with accommodations planned out.   Looks like I have a new goal!

If biking is more your speed, be sure to get a trail pass.   While the trail is open to hikers year-round, snowmobiles and ATVs also have use in winter months.
