About this place

Added by Kyle Szegedi

Artist Point is one of the most beautiful and easily accessed destinations near Mt. Baker during the summer and early autumn months. While most people visit to go hiking or watch the sunset, I always find myself staying well into the morning hours. With great 360° views, this is the perfect spot to see the milky way or a meteor shower!

A couple things must coincide for you to have a great time watching the milky way at Artist Point. The road up to Artist is only open during the summer and early Autumn months but it's always good to check on the Washington State Department of Transportation website to see current road conditions and possible closures. If your hoping to see the milky way or are interested in going during optimal stargazing conditions, try and plan your trip around a new moon as that is when the stars will shine the brightest. Definitely check weather conditions as well, look for a clear night with little to no clouds.

To get to Artist Point, head east on Highway 542 from Bellingham, WA and continue east for 57 miles until you reach the end of the highway. Try and arrive before sunset so you have some time to pick your stargazing spot and don't have to walk around in the dark!

If your hoping to capture some photos of the milky way with your DSLR camera make sure to bring a tripod! Use the widest lens that you have and open the Aperture up all the way, for most cameras this will be around f/2-f/4. Next choose a very slow shutter speed, anywhere from 15sec - 30sec. Lastly choose a high ISO anywhere from 1600-6400 depending on your camera!
