High Steel Bridge is a legal and safe alternative to trespassing on nearby Vance Creek Bridge. This is a historic bridge seemingly located in the middle of nowhere with amazing views of Vance Creek and guaranteed peacefulness.
Located about 20 minutes outside of Shelton, Washington on US Forest Service Road NF-2340. To get there, head North on Highway 101 and exit onto W Skokomish Valley Rd. about 12 miles (or 20 minutes) after passing Shelton.
W Skokomish Valley Road will take you through a beautiful area of farmland, beware, the road may be flooded at times. It was for us. After about 10 minutes of driving on W Skokomish Valley Road exit slightly right onto NF-23, it immediately begins uphill. Continue on NF-23, shortly after the road turns into a horrendous gravel road, you will see a sign that says "High Steel Bridge 3" pointing to the right. Exit right and follow NF-2340 3 miles to High Steel Bridge. You will be rewarded for your excursion, High Steel Bridge is essentially the paved road version of Vance Creek Viaduct, offering beautiful views of Vance Creek, a waterfall and if you are lucky, there will be a light fog that sets the PNW mood this bridge can offer.
Park your car and walk out onto the bridge, traffic will be minimal, and you might not see one other vehicle. Make sure you bring your camera because there are plenty of amazing photo opportunities but don't forget to just take in the view and hopefully, you can enjoy good company while you are out there.
**Final Note: A 4x4 vehicle is recommended if possible, otherwise you can get away with a small vehicle, but drive with caution and care. There is no cell phone service in this area, so make sure you inform someone of where you are headed in case anything goes wrong. Also, the picture above was taken safely from behind a railing on the bridge, do not attempt to dangle from the bridge or put yourself in harm's way.
