About this place

Added by Rachel Davidson

Take an easy stroll - or summit race - up Whidbey Island's highest point, Goose Rock.

Deception Pass State Park is one of Washington state's favorite year-round destinations; Beachside camping, salt-water kayaking, and plenty of short, accessible trails with endless views of the strait. Goose Rock, the tallest point on Whidbey Island, is just southeast of the Deception Pass bridge and a popular destination for its moderate hike and gorgeous payoff.

This adventure starts just beneath the southern end of the Deception Pass bridge, where you’ll take the leftmost trail along the water towards the east side of the park. You’ll see signs for the Goose Rock Perimeter Trail, which you’ll follow for as long as you want. This trail circumnavigates the mountain and has three different fork options that will lead you to the summit – from the north, northeast, and south. For this route, follow the Perimeter Trail all the way to its southernmost end until you see a large wooden sign stating “Goose Rock Summit: 0.8 miles, 30 minutes to the top.” Take a sharp right uphill here and follow the trail to the top.

Find a spot on the many flat rock platforms and soak in the view! When you’re ready to head back, continue downhill towards the Discovery Trail, which will land you back where you started beneath the bridge.
