Distance: 1.2 miles round trip. Elevation gain: 650 feet. Climb a short distance up through a Douglas Fir and Pacific Madrone forest to a grassy bluff. Views of Garrison Bay, Bell Point, the Gulf islands, Olympic Mountains, and channels to Victoria B. C.!
From the main parking lot at English camp, follow the wide path east and cross West Valley road to the trailhead of Young Hill. The trail switchbacks several times and leads you past the English Camp cemetery. Continue left on the main trail through the forest of Pacific Madrone trees until you reach a wide open grassy bluff with sweeping views over the bay. Continue to hike another 1/4 mile across rocks and through grassy meadows to reach the summit of Young Hill at 625 feet above sea level. If it's sunny you can see the Olympic Peninsula and into Canada! Return the way you came and take time to also explore the history of English Camp.
This is a great day adventure for anyone! Take the ferry from Anacortes to Friday harbor, stop for lunch, drive across San Juan Island and make sure to include this short hiking adventure in your day trip!
If you're looking for a longer hike, there are several other hiking trails beyond Young Hill that take you back down to West Valley Road. If you do explore more trails, remember that you may have to hike along the road to return back to the trailhead at English Camp.
Happy exploring!
