Summerland is a beautiful trail that is easy to hike and explore. There are pently of areas to stop and have a picnic or just enjoy the view of Mount Rainier and Little Tohoma Peak. After setting up base camp here you can explore the Wonderland Trail .
The Summerland trail is by far the easiest trail that I ever experienced. The trail is well maintained and for the first 3 miles you are surrounded by trees and the sound of waterfalls and rivers, and it's green everywhere. The last 1.3 miles, you encounter switchbacks and you can get some views of the peak of Mount Rainier on the way up.
There's plenty of wildlife in close proximity to the trail; we saw a herd of Mountain Goats on the other side of the mountain and I came across a Doe Deer followed by a Buck Deer.
Things to Keep in Mind:
- You have to get a permit to overnight camp here and the Rangers on the trail daily.
- You will have to pay for a parking permit too. $12, but it is covered for one week.
- Free of charge, they will go over the rules on the mountain and what to expect. Do not pack a Bear Can. They provide Bear Hangs at the campsites.
Driving Directions
From Enumclaw, take Highway 410 east 43 miles to the White River Entrance of Mt. Rainier National Park. Veer right on Sunride Road, follow this 4 miles to the trailhead near Fryingpan Creek. Co-ordinates: 46.8938, -121.5792
