Shenandoah Caverns is an easy walk through beautiful caverns just under 2 hours from Washington D.C. These caverns are a nice alternative to the more popular Luray Caverns. Tour sizes vary from 4-6 people, and most tours you won't see people other than the ones in your group.
Located west of Washington D.C. off Interstate 81 (exit 269) Shenandoah Caverns is a nice little place tucked away in the Virginia country side. Upon arrival you will be able to park your vehicle for free in the lot right across the street. The building you want to enter is called "The Yellow Barn at Shenandoah Caverns" there is another "Yellow Barn" on this road but this is not the entrance to the caverns. Simply entering "Shenandoah Caverns, VA" in your GPS or phone will bring you to the proper building.
You will enter what looks like a souvenir shop and see the stairs that lead to the caverns right in front of you. Although there are stairs, tours will bring you down by elevator.
Prices are similar to Luray Caverns but one can usually find Groupon deals for up to 50% off admission price.
The tour is a total of a mile long and can get slippery at certain points.
Stepping into these caves and seeing all the formations really lets you appreciate how old they are and the process it took to form over millions of years.
