Hike through an old growth forest to a marsh that is excellent for bird watching and spotting Bald Eagles.
Just at the entrance to Mason Neck State Park is the Woodmarsh Trail. The entire loop is about 3 miles. This is a pleasant easy hike that is relatively flat with no rocks to speak of. The trail wanders through a forest and passes by a large swamp along the Potomac River. There is one well built observation platform along the way called Eagle Point. After this point the trail approaches the marsh for a short period then wanders back into the forest.
This is a good trail to take a relaxing walk and observe wildlife along the marsh. It would also make for a good trail run. The area is known for nesting Bald Eagles. The best time of day to observe them is morning and around noon time. But of course, all this is hit or miss. I did not see any Eagles during my hike. Still, this is a worthwhile easy hike.
