About this place

Added by Crystal Sibson

The Moccasin Mountain Dinosaur Tracksite has various types of dinosaur footprints fossilized around a prehistoric watering hole.

The Moccasin Mountain Dinosaur Tracksite is one of the most diverse track sites in North America.  The site contains hundreds of fossilized tracks from at least five different species of dinosaur.  The tracks have been preserved since the early Jurassic period dating back to approximately 180 million years ago when the site was an oasis.  The footprints have been revealed by the erosion of the sedimentary sandstone.  Tracks from Kayentapus, Grallator, Otozoum, Bratrachopus, and Brasilichnium can all be found here.

The site sits just outside of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park near the Utah Arizona border.  The road to the tracksite has sections of deep sand and only should be attempted with a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle.  There are two small parking areas, an upper area delineated by a fence to stop drivers from dropping into the drainage and a lower area for OHV's in the drainage near the informative signs.  Please do not drive past this point as doing so could cause damage to the dinosaur tracks.  Even though the tracks have survived for millions of years, they can easily be damaged.
