About this place

Added by John Loyola

Hike to a white sandstone corkscrew shaped rock and explore the surrounding area with more unique features.

Like the submarine in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, Jules Verne called it "A Masterpiece Containing Masterpieces." The Nautilus, what some say is shaped like a corkscrew or a sea shell, is a white sandstone formation with multiple colors, shapes and textures. This makes it a great place for photography. But please use caution and care when visiting this location. The sandstone is very fragile and can be damaged quite easily. Some of the edges are very thin and can break off with a light touch. Leave no trace and tread softly.

The best time to photograph the Nautilus is early morning, late afternoons or overcast days so that you avoid the harsh light and contrasting shade.

To get there, take Highway 89, exit at the Paria Contact Station and follow the dirt road for 1.5 miles towards the White House trailhead. The trail is the last wash before the White House trailhead parking. There is a small section to the right of the wash to park. Head East in the wash for half a mile. The Nautilus is located on the right side of the wash. Look for the large rock formation with the yellow horizontal stripes.
