Hike to the Johnson Canyon Arch in Snow Canyon State Park

Note: the Johnson Arch Trail is closing March 15, 2019 and will not re-open until September 14, 2019

Johnson Canyon Arch is an out-and-back trail of about 2 miles round trip length that crosses beds of volcanic rock and follows a creek to a large arch and towering canyon views. There is negligible elevation gain/loss. 

To get there, find the Johnson Canyon parking area just outside the Snow Canyon State Park gates. The lot is to the left and just outside the fee area. The hike will be on the right side of the road. Cross at the crosswalk and open the swinging gate to begin your hike.

Immediately you will see volcanic rock emerging from the sandy trail. Continue for a half mile or so in the open until the trail veers into the canyon. When entering the canyon, look for the arch. It is not at the end of the trail, but shortly after it, comes the canyon. 

The trail will continue until it dead ends into an impassable canyon wall. Marvel at the height of the red rocks before you, then turn to return the way you came. The creek bed nearby is overgrown, and frogs can be heard beneath the brush. 

The website states this trail is only open Nov - March, but I hiked on Oct. 31, and it was open. Check with local rangers before planning if not during this window.

The Johnson Canyon Arch is a straightforward hike, and quite scenic for its duration--a great way to experience a red rock canyon close to the civilization of the St. George area.
