About this place

Explore ancient Indian granary's and the top of a butte that provides great views of Canyonlands.

The Aztec Butte Trail is a two pronged out and back trail for a total of two miles. The trail is single track and easy to follow. After a third of a mile the trail splits. To the left, a trail takes you to the top of a small mesa. There is an informative sign marking the way. On the other side of this mesa is an ancient stone structure called a granary. Descend back to the trail split. The other prong of the trail takes you to the top of Aztec Mesa. This is a very steep hike up. When you reach the slick rock of Aztec Mesa, the trail is marked with cairns.  However, there are quite a few marking several different ways to ascend.  Pick the one you are most comfortable with. Once on top of the of the mesa there is a social trail that circles the top. Also around the top is another ancient structure.

This is a very nice hike with great views of Taylor Canyon and the Island in the Sky prairie.

Check out the Granary
Nice hike through Canyonlands. The star of the trail for me was the ancient corn granary built under the cliff face.
