About this place

Added by Steven Styers

Traverse slickrock benches and hike along canyon rims with awesome views for miles! Imagine what it was like to live thousands of years ago as you make your way to an amazing pictograph panel.

Trail Description

This adventure starts at Squaw Flat Trailhead A in the Needles District of the Canyonlands. Get there early to claim a parking spot, as there are several trails in the area, and you will want to see the colors change in the rock formations as the sun rises in front of you on your way to Salt Creek Canyon.

While there is no change in total elevation, there are abundant elevation changes along the way. For the first mile however, you will mostly hike on a well-marked trail through flat desert.

As you approach Lost Canyon, you will encounter a slickrock climb that will take you up and over to the rim. Keep an eye out for the cairns that will lead you to the first of two ladders along the trail. From there, you will drop down into the canyon and hike along a sandy trail until you reach another slickrock formation that will take you up to the rim. This is the same section of trail used for Squaw Canyon and Lost Canyon hikers, so expect some company for the first 2.5 miles until you branch off of the Lost Canyon trail junction!

The rest of the trail is marked by cairns while you hike along canyon rims. The views along this portion of the trail are jaw-dropping spectacular! The pictograph is located at Salt Creek Canyon, which is your destination. There is a sign there that explains the history of the ancient civilizations that made their mark there. Find some shade and eat some lunch before you return the way you came.

60+ Rating: Somewhat Strenuous

If you are 60+ like I am, you can do this! Keep in mind that you will be exposed to the sun most of the way. Your knees and calves will get a workout as you move up and down the slickrock formations. Unless you absolutely need them, trekking poles will just be a nuisance. The hike will likely be a challenge, but well worth the adventure!
