Angels Landing, West Rim, Telephone Loop

The Angels Landing, West Rim, Telephone Loop Trail is a 14+ mile heavily-trafficked loop trail located in Zion National Park near Springdale, Utah. This iconic trail offers incredible views of Zion Canyon and is rated as difficult, with steep drop-offs on both sides of the narrow ridgeline section.

The trail starts at the Grotto Picnic Area and heads south, following the west rim of Zion Canyon on the West Rim Trail. This section has elevation changes between 3900-5790 feet and passes several landmarks like Angels Landing and Scout Lookout. The views of the canyon are phenomenal along this part of the trail. One notable feature is Walter's Wiggles, named after the park's first superintendent, which has 21 steep switchbacks carved into the rock face that help navigate the elevation change.

The final 0.5 mile stretch up to Angels Landing itself has chains bolted into the rock walls along both sides to provide handholds. This exposed, narrow rock fin has steep drop-offs of 1000+ feet on both sides. The 360-degree views at the top are breathtaking. After summiting Angels Landing, the Telephone Loop Trail loops back to Scout Lookout and descends along the east rim.

The trail is very strenuous, with steep sections and areas of rock scrambling. The ridge section has extreme exposure and steep drop-offs on both sides, so it is not for anyone with a fear of heights. Spring and fall are best times to visit, as summers can be extremely hot. The park is busiest March-October, so start early to beat crowds. Essentials to bring are plenty of water, snacks, proper hiking footwear with grip, and sun protection. Trekking poles are recommended for added stability. Be prepared for potential wildlife encounters.

• Permit Required - This trail requires a permit from March - October. You can get one online ahead of time or at the visitor center day-of.
• Shuttle Access - The best way to access the trailheads is via the park's shuttle system. No private vehicles beyond the Visitor Center.
• Weather - Check forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing desert weather. Lightning is a real hazard.
• Morning Hours - An early start is highly recommended to avoid afternoon heat and thunderstorms.
• Time - Give yourself plenty of time. The trail is not recommended for first time hikers or anyone afraid of heights. Go at your own pace.
• Crowds - This is one of the most popular trails in Zion. Manage expectations and be courteous when passing on the steep sections.
• Leashed Dogs Allowed - But not recommended due to dangerous terrain and cliffs.
• Restrooms - Available at the Grotto Picnic area and Scout Lookout. No facilities on the Angels Landing trail section.
• Water - Bring more than enough. It's hot and dry. Fill up at Zion Canyon Visitor Center.
• Cell Service - Limited to nonexistent in the canyon. Download maps offline.
