About this place

Added by Outbound

Located within the scenic Dixie National Forest near Bryce Canyon National Park, Tropic Reservoir is a serene high-elevation lake surrounded by pine forests and red rock vistas. Sitting at about 8,000 feet elevation, the reservoir offers a quiet escape for camping, fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing, making it a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore Southern Utah’s lesser-known natural gems.

Activities:

  • Fishing: The reservoir is regularly stocked with rainbow, brook, and tiger trout. Both shore fishing and small boats (non-motorized or electric motors) are popular.

  • Boating & Kayaking: Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are welcome. A boat ramp on the north shore provides easy access.

  • Swimming: is permitted and often enjoyed by visitors looking to cool off during warmer months. The water is generally clean, and the shoreline near the boat ramp and day-use areas provides easy access.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Deer, elk, birds of prey, and other wildlife are often spotted in the surrounding forest and meadows.

  • Hiking & ATV Access: The reservoir sits near several forest service roads and trailheads, offering hiking, mountain biking, and OHV access.

  • Picnicking: Day-use areas along the shoreline make for great spots to relax or enjoy lunch with a view.

Permits & Fees:

  • No special permits are required for day-use activities.

  • Camping fees apply at Tropic Reservoir Campground; reservations can be made on Recreation.gov.

  • A valid Utah fishing license is required for anglers.

Parking & Access:

  • Access is via FR 087, a graded dirt road from Highway 12 near Bryce Canyon. The road is usually passable by most vehicles in dry conditions, but check local weather and road reports.

  • Free parking is available near the boat launch and campground.

Pet Policy:

  • Dogs are welcome at the reservoir and campground. They must be kept on leash in developed areas and should not disturb wildlife or other visitors.

Additional Info:

  • Best visited from late spring through early fall; snow and road closures may limit access in winter.

  • There is no cell service in much of the area — bring a paper map or GPS device if venturing into surrounding trails.

  • Campfires may be restricted during high fire danger periods — check current fire regulations before visiting.
