Candy striped cliffs reminiscent of the Wave and Valley of Fire in an easy and family friendly hike.
Though only a few miles from civilization as a bird flies, this trailhead is only accessible via a dirt road (that can be quite bumpy - high clearance vehicles recommended though I did it in a car). Given the condition of the road, drive time can be 45 minutes from St George, Utah. The road is accessed via Silver Reef by Leeds, UT and directions are easy to find online. This is an easier hike that the whole family can do, though there are some steeper sandstone and slick rock descents from the trailhead to the candy cliffs. There are two main sections to explore. The trail dumps you on the western flat. Though very impressive, I prefer the eastern flats (about a quarter of a mile to the east). Still, plan on plenty of time to explore both.
On my first visit, I camped there so as to see both the sunrise and sunset. First light on these rocks is pretty incredible. I have found that the harsh mid-day sun tends to bleach the rocks a bit.
A word of caution, the southern most part of the flats are bordered by high cliffs so definitely keep an eye on children and pets. This is BLM area and requires no fee to enter.
