Off-the-Beaten-Path in Nepal: Exploring Without the Crowds

You don't have to look too far in the news to recognize that overcrowding is a growing issue both on Mount Everest and in Nepal. 

There was a time, not too long ago, when a trek in Nepal was one of the most remote adventures you could take. Now, whether it is climbing to the world's tallest peak or hiking to base camp, solitude can be a tricky thing to find.

You can still experience Nepal without the crowds if you know where to look. We turned to our friends at World Expeditions, who have operated small group treks in Nepal for over 40 years, for advice.

Trek Gokyo and the Renjo La

Experience Sherpa culture, panoramic views of Everest, and the glacier-fed waters of the Gokyo Lakes on a trek to Gokyo and the Renjo La. Visit Mallory's Base Camp in Tibet

An adventure tour to Rongphu Valley in Tibet, with views of Mt Everest's north face from the base camp George Mallory used in the 1920s, is the highlight of the High Road to Lhasa expedition. It's a journey that only a handful of dedicated travelers make each year and includes a visit to the former home of the Dalai Lama. 

Explore Annapurna

The Annapurna region of Nepal is a feast for the senses. Colorful teahouses dot the landscape, mountain trails wind through some of the world's tallest peaks, and the views are so grand that they are almost unbelievable. This region is not only beautiful but due to it's lower elevation, it's a great introduction to trekking in Nepal.

Tackle the Great Himalaya Trail

The Great Himalaya Trail runs east to west from Pakistan to Bhutan, covering more than 4,500 kilometers. It's the longest alpine trail on earth, and a trek along any portion of the trail will challenge your physical fitness, test your commitment, and bring you through some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the world. Though it's not for the faint of heart, if you're looking for the real Himalayas, this is it.

Visit the Rugged Corners of Nepal

Head out on an exploratory journey to regions that have been seldom visited by tourists, such as Damodar Region. Trek through small villages on this remote traverse in the Mustang District of Nepal, and climb 6,042-meter Saribung Pass. Expect challenging climbs, a rugged landscape, and the chance for solitude.
