Fun for the Thrill Seekers

Red River Ski & Summer Area's scenic chairlift ride is a must-do while in the area, but those looking for a hit of adrenaline won't want to miss the Pioneer Flyer Seated Zip Line. Unlike other zip lines, this one starts at ground level and cranks you backward 600 feet, pauses for dramatic effect (and to see the beautiful scenery), then releases you back down the slope and speeds that reach 35 miles per hour.

Lovers of heights will dig the Hidden Treasure Aerial Park, where each session includes an obstacle course and access to two different zip lines.

Fish the Red River

The Red River beckons anglers to its cool waters filled with brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and Rio Grande Cutthroat. The Red River flows right through town on its journey to the Rio Grande confluence in nearby Questa. Hire a fishing guide to experience all the best spots, or meander along the banks and try your luck at casting into the deep pools. 

Hike in the Carson National Forest

One of the great things about Red River is that hiking is never far away. For those who like to learn as they hike, Red River Ski & Summer Area offers "Walks with a Ranger" during the summer. Join a National Forest Ranger for a 1.5-hour walk around the summit of Red River, while they point out geologic and historical landmarks. Other nearby hikes include the Columbine Trail, Red River Nature Trail, and Middle Fork Trail.

For those who like to go a bit off the beaten path, a hike up Wheeler Peak—New Mexico's tallest mountain at 13,161 feet—provides views all the way into Colorado on a clear day.
