From the Appalachian Mountains in the west to the Chesapeake Bay in the east, Maryland is a haven for those seeking adventure. Whether you're looking to recreate on land or water (especially water...Maryland has 7,719 miles of shoreline and at least 42 rivers!), this mid-Atlantic state delivers.
To get you started, here are ten unforgettable adventures in Maryland to check out this weekend.
Maryland's second tallest waterfall is a perfect excursion for families (including dogs!) and in the summer months, you can jump into the chilly pool at its base.
Can you resist a paddle through something called "The Ghost Fleet of the Pomomac?" Because we sure can't. Paddle through the remains of excess World War I military ships that were salvaged, burned, and sunk in Mallows Bay.
Over 40 miles of trail are ready for your feet or wheels on the Northern Central Rail Trail in Maryland and the York Country Heritage Trail in Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a casual but fun adventure, this is where you'll find it.
Hike on the Appalachian Trail through South Mountain State Park, making stops to take in the scenic viewpoints along the way. This 8-mile trail leads to some great routes for rock climbers, as well.
Looking for an escape from the city? Located just outside of Baltimore, Dundee Creek is a beautiful marsh ecosystem that is prime paddling country. Look for bald eagles, terrapins, and woodpeckers.
There are big rewards on this short, 2.1-mile trail that is great for families. Multiple waterfalls (and swimming holes!) can be found on this wander through Patapsco Valley State Park.
Catoctin Mountain Park is a popular Maryland destination, but do you know about the two Adirondack-style camping shelters tucked in its northwestern corner? If not, now you do...and you should go book one immediately. They are a moderately-difficult 3-mile hike in to the park, but worth every step.
Hike, paddle, or cycle in Black Hill Regional Park. This spot is family-friendly with a visitor's center, boat rentals, and a playground for the kids. It's most calm in the evenings...which is the perfect time to take in the sunset and watch for birds.
Climb to a panoramic view of the Potomac River at Point of Rocks, where the river cuts through the Catoctin Range of the Appalachian Mountains. Close to Harper's Ferry, this is a short adventure that features a cool train tunnel.
