With minimal crowds and great cliff views, Guadalupe River State Park is a wonderful place to escape the Texas heat and kayak!
Once you enter Guadalupe River State Park, be sure to grab a map of the park as the roads can be a little confusing. Drive toward the Discovery Center Loop where you'll find a large parking lot near the river. Slather on some sunscreen, grab your kayak, and head downhill toward the river!
The river within the park boundaries is fairly calm with a few small rapids, so even a beginner kayaker can enjoy the trip. Be sure to take in the incredible greenery from the cypress trees on the banks and marvel at their twisting roots. This portion is an out-and-back trip, so the length of the trip depends on you! It is important to note when the park ends and when private property begins (there will be signs). The river is public, but do not get out on private property...you will be fined for trespassing!
This area is also great for swimming and exploring the many trails the park has to offer (including one that follows along side the river), so friends can take turns between kayaking. Be sure to bring a lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables on the shore (there's even grills so bring some burgers and dogs!).
For those looking for a longer kayaking trip, Guadalupe River State Park is a great start for a point-to-point trip to Nichol's Landing (29° 52' 45.9" N, 98° 26' 53.8" W), which is a 5 hour trip (depending on flow). This trip has incredible scenic views and several rapids to make it an exciting and beautiful experience. Because of the rapids, only experienced kayakers should attempt this route. Since it is a point-to-point trip, be sure to have someone pick you up at the end point.
This route is accessible all season, but summer is definitely the highlight!
