During the summer months, 1.5 million Mexican-free-tailed bats emerge at sunset from the Congress street bridge. It's a sight to behold and a must when visiting/living in Austin.
Every evening, just as the sun sets, you can watch the 1.5 million bats take flight into the evening sky. This is great family fun and a must if you visit/are new to Austin.
Parking is easy and nearby, however it is paid. There is a separate lot located in the Austin American Stateman parking lot dedicated for this event. Once you park, you are able to walk up on the bridge or relax in the grass below. This area is located off of a section of the Austin Hike and Bike trail around Town Lake. You can watch the bats from either the north or south side of the river. The south side is where the parking lot is located.
The area is kid-, handicap-, and dog-friendly.
