Port Royal State Historic Park

The town of Port Royal was established in 1797, one year after Tennessee became a state. This was a major port for flat boats transporting of tobacco and other goods. The Red River was the life blood of the entire region. 

Today, the park encompassing 30 acres, preserves and provides recreation along the same river bank that those carrying trade did over 200 years ago.

Situated along the Red River and Sulphur Fork Creek, it is a great place for fishing, canoeing, hiking and bird watching. Many outfitters in the area provide canoes and kayaks to explore many miles of the Red River. 

A couple of short hiking trails cross ancient bridges, lush creek beds with plenty of wildflowers in the spring and summer. 

Picnic areas provide a quick rest before splashing and swimming the river on hot summer days.
