About this place

Added by Emilie Anne

A nice high altitude hike above Lake Walen in the north-eastern part of Switzerland (in the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona)with spectacular views of the Churfirsten mountain chain and the Spitzmeilen. The area presents an exceptional and dramatic display of mountain building through continental collision.

Maschgenkamm (2019m) is the starting point of this hike, which can easily be reached by cable car from Flumserberg. You can get to Flumserberg either by car, by post car from Sargans or cable car from Unterterzen. It takes about 90 minutes from Zurich.

First follow the yellow sign for Ziegerfurglen and then for Calans. After an hour you will reach Calans (2069m). About 30 minutes from Calans you will come across another yellow sign. Follow the direction to Spitzmeilen. Hike up to the Wissmilenpass (2415m) and Wissmilen (2483m) which provides nice views over the Spitzmeilen and the Madseeli. The way is indicated with red-white stripped signs painted on rocks. Arrived at the foot of the Spitzmeilen it will require some climbing to reach the peak. There are metal chaines anchored into the rock to use as handlines. The reward for the steep climb to the top of Spitzmeilen (2501m) is the 360° views of the Glarus and Grisons mountain peaks. There is a summit cross and in a metal box you can find a guest book. From the Spitzmeilen hike down to the Spitzmeilen hut at 2087m which takes about 30 minutes. Explore stony richness of colours in this area. You can stay over night at the hut (reservation required) or hike about 2 hours back to Maschgenkamm. Check the operating hours of the cable car first. There is the possibility to eat at the Spitzmeilen hut and/or at the restaurant at Maschgenkamm.

Duration: 6 hours
