About this place

Added by Mike Fennell

Experience the gorgeous greenness of South Carolina along this 2.5 mile trek that will take you through pine uplands, tidal marsh, freshwater ponds, and managed wildlife wetlands.

The trailhead is located at the South Tibwin parking lot on the east side of Highway 17, about 12.5 miles north of McClellanville. You will see a large metal gate and hikers bulletin board. This is a lollipop loop trail that is on an old forest road.

The trailhead is at the south end of the parking lot and heads into the forest. After a quarter mile, you'll come across a house and the trail will split, and you will take the right fork. Shortly after that, you'll cross the Tibwin Creek bridge, then find a junction after that, stay to the right. 0.8 miles along the trail you'll run into another junction and you'll turn left (south). Half a mile later there will be another split, and you will turn left again. 0.4 miles from the last split, you'll come upon the bird blinding (1.2 miles from the trailhead) that looks out over the Tibwin Creek tributary. Try your eye at finding a bald eagle, but also be aware of alligators roaming the area. From the bird blinding, head north from the trail junction, and 0.3 miles later you'll complete the loop from where it split at the house. Follow the old forest road back out for another 0.4 miles to reach the parking lot.

Warning: Bring bug spray!
