Costa Rica is a rugged rainforest country located in Central America. It has coastlines on both the Caribbean and Pacific oceans and is known for its beautiful beaches, active volcanoes, countless waterfalls, and incredible biodiversity. In May 2015, I had the opportunity to explore this country for 16 days and have summed up my 8 favourite places I recommend you visit.

1) Watch the sunset over the Central Valley of San Jose, the capital city. (Photo location: Santa Ana)

2) Experience the Waterfall Garden at La Paz. La Paz is a large, privately owned ecological reserve, featuring hiking, several waterfalls, and a rescued wildlife preserve. (Photo location: La Paz Waterfall Garden)

3) See an active volcano crater and lagoon. Poas Volcano, at an elevation of 8,885 ft (2,708 m), remains one of Costa Rica's largest and most active volcanoes. (Photo Location: Poas Volcano National Park)

4) Watch the sunset over one of Costa Rica's most notable natural features, Arenal Lake and Volcano Arenal. The active volcano, at 3,740 ft (1,140 m), is easily recognizable with its iconic conical shape. (Photo location: El Castillo)

5) Experience the blue waters of Celeste River. Located in Volcano Tenorio National Park, it is known for its distinctive sky blue coloration. (Photo location: Volcano Tenorio National Park)

6) Take a hike through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and experience its incredible biodiversity. (Photo location: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve)

7) Swim and hangout at a hidden waterfall in Guanacaste, Llanos de Cortes. (Photo location: Llanos de Cortes)

8) Relax at the pristine beaches on Nicoya Peninsula. A popular tourist destination attracting visitors wanting white-sand beaches with world-class surf. (Photo location: Santa Teresa)
