About this place

Added by Moe Lauchert

Countless Unique Viewpoints. No Traffic in Offseason. Minimal Gear. Scenic Drive. Some Free Camping Areas.

We started off in Big Sur and took as many pull-off viewpoints as possible between Big Sur and the final destination, Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The weather was foggy in some spots but would open up to reveal the vast Pacific Ocean and sun in others. The weather was mild for us but we're familiar with the cold. The temp was averaging in the mid 60s (F) and around 18 (C).

The 95 Miles between Big Sur and Pigeon point afforded us with about 10 viewpoint stops which resulted in about 10 miles of hiking and wandering along the beach, rocky sea stacks, and hidden unmaintained trail. At most of our stops, there were surfers and trail runners although we elected not to participate. Much of the 1 and 101 is winding road with some sections freshly paved. In an effort to see as much of the coast in one go as possible we spent around 30mins at each stop. We started around 7am and arrived at the Lighthouse at about 3pm. We took the 1 the entire way up the coast and in the offseason there is little to no traffic.
