The Oakoasis Preserve boasts 400 acres of protected oak woodland, grassy planes, and spectacular views of the San Vincente Reservoir. Still in recovery from a 2003 fire which consumed 95% of the preserve, Oakoasis has made a remarkable recovery.
Starting at the trail-head, head down towards the oak-lined ravine marking the beginning of the hike. With trees already growing back from the 2003 fire, these sections of the trail are nice and shady, and quite relaxing. About 1 mile in you will start to see the San Vicente Reservoir to your left. Take the 'Scenic Overlook' trail that veers left for 200 yards or so and takes you to a breathtaking view you didn't know existed in this part of the county! Sit back, and relish in it for as long as needed before heading back and going left onto original trail. The signs will say "Trail" and are perfectly placed along the hike to keep you informed of where to go!
After the scenic overlook, you will head up a semi steep hill that leads you into a grassy vale, a landscape completely different than the one you were just at! You will head into another small ravine before making your way back up to the staging area. You will pass a 'Half Way' sign, and then towards the end the signs will start to say 'Parking' to let you know your always heading the right way.
Just a side note- you are hiking an area that is home to Rattlesnakes and Mountain Lions. Always take notice of your surroundings, and where you are stepping. If you are lucky enough to see a Mountain Lion(very unlikely) , stand your ground and make loud noises and sounds to scare it if it approaches, never run. A whistle can come in handy in this situation. This is important to note as the Cougar population increases(protected species), and habitat decreases in San Diego.
