Iron Mountain Peak Trail offers beautiful 360 degree views of San Diego County with the best sunrises & sunsets!
Iron Mountain is the longest wilderness trail in Poway, CA. The parking lot is free and provides bathroom and water fountain amenities. The distance from the parking area to the summit is approximately 3.2 miles. Beginning with a wide smooth trail, slowly transitioning into semi-technical inclined switchbacks. The trail holds unique wildlife and landscapes. In total you gain just over a 1,000ft in elevation and the average hike time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to the top. Once at the summit there are a few picnic tables and an observation telescope. Iron Mountain provides one of the best 360 degree views throughout the county. I highly recommend hiking here for a sunrise or sunset. Be sure to bring a flash light or headlamp for either one.
I hiked here for a sunrise and started with a flash light at 5:30am. There were a few other groups with flashlights as well seeking that beautiful sunrise this place provides. This place provides for just about all styles of photography. Obviously, I took a lot of photos. Like most trails in San Diego County it is hot and dry so be sure to bring plenty of water.
