About this place

Added by Ryan Blake

Distance. 1.7 mile loop. Elevation gain: 250 ft. Amazing panoramic views in "The Oregon Outback" of Fort Rock. Great photography area. Sprawling views. Hike inside the rock structure.

There's a great beginners hike inside the rock crater itself, and if you drive on the dirt road on the south side of the rock you can get to some great vista points and photography spots.

This is great during the day or night (amazing starry views on clear nights), and you can get here any time of year, although Spring, Summer, and Fall are the best.

Getting there: From La Pine, head east on Hwy 31 till you hit County Rd. 5 - 10, left on Cow Cave Lane, and right on County Rd. 5 - 11a. You'll run straight into Fort Rock from there. If you're coming from the east, head west through Christmas Valley, stay on the only paved road that twists and turns northwest and you'll run straight into Fort Rock.
