Old growth forest. Quiet seclusion. Wildlife. 1.3 mile loop with a 690' elevation gain.
From the parking area, the Valley of the Giants trail crosses the Siletz River and passes a tranquil picnic spot before beginning a 1.3 miles loop trail through some of Oregon's oldest and largest Doug Fir trees. Many reach 500 years in age and heights exceeding 200 feet. In fall, vine maples explode with auto colors under a dense green canopy.
The elevation gain is less than 690 feet, but there are occasional steep sections that may take some careful stepping for families.
At the back end of the loop, explore Big Guy, an enormous Douglas-fir that once stood at around 230 feet, before being knocked down in a storm. Before crossing the river back to the parking lot, hang out on the banks of the Siletz River near the picnic site.
The drive to the trailhead is an adventure itself and should be researched before embarking. The BLM website for Valley of the Giants has terrific directions, as well as Matt Reeder's book Off the Beaten Trail.
