Warren and Lancaster Falls

The hike along Mt. Defiance Trail to Warren and Lancaster Falls is great if you want to get away from some of the more crowded destinations in the gorge, or just want to catch some shade during the summer. The trail is fairly easygoing, though the last 1/4th of a mile to Lancaster Falls is a bit of a leg burner.

The hike starts at Starvation Creek State Park. From the parking lot, take the paved path adjacent to the entrance that runs parallel to the freeway. The paved path turns into a shaded trail not far from the parking lot, and continues for just under 3/4 of a mile to Warren Falls. The falls can be seen directly behind the bridge crossing over Warren Creek, and if you scramble up the hillside just over the bridge, you can get a better view of the upper tier of the falls.

From Warren Falls, continue along the Mt. Defiance Trail for another 1/4th of a mile until you reach Lancaster Falls. The lowest tier of Lancaster Falls can be easily seen from the trail, as it spills across the trail itself. The upper tier of the falls can be glimpsed through the foliage above the lower tier. It is possible to scramble up the very steep, crumbly slope adjacent to the lower tier; however, there is a lot of poison oak, so it’s wise to wear long pants, and only make the climb if you’re sure of your footing.

On your way back down to the parking lot, or on the way up, be sure to catch the amazing view of the gorge. The whole area gets lit up with a beautiful glow if you make your return trip as the sun is setting behind you.
