360 degree view of all the Cascade mountains, Willamette Valley and Coast Mountain Range. Snowshoeing during the winter. Views of Detroit and Tumble Lake (with swimming). Camping on Dome Rock and at Tumble Lake.
From Highway 22 at the Breitenbush River Bridge, in Detroit, turn north on to French Creek Rd. Drive up French Creek about 7.7 miles to the Upper TH #3379/3381 to Dome Rock and Tumble Lake. The trail can be found on the left side of the road and is easily seen after you pass it. It's best to pass it and use the next fork in the road to turn around. Park off to the side of the road.
It's a 1.5 mile hike to the 4,860 foot summit. On the way you can split off onto trail #3379 to Tumble Lake, a great place to camp and swim during the summer months. Once you reach the summit, look for the U.S. Army of Engineers summit mark with a date of 1939 stamped on it. On clear days you can see Mt. Adams and Saint Helens in Washington, Mt Hood, Jefferson, Washington, 3 Fingered Jack and the 3 Sisters of the large mountains in the cascade range. Some of the smaller peaks can also be seen: 3 Pyramids, Coffin and Bachelor Mountain. You can even see some parts of Detroit Lake down below.
There is amazing night time viewing. To the west you can see Salem's light pollution and city lights from Mill City to Gates. To the East, you can see the skyline of the mountain pass with city lights from Redmond, Bend and Sisters, and to the North you can see a glow from Portland.
