Active and challenging experience. Beautiful scenery views while you fish. Unique activity in a scenic spot.
Head East out of Bend, Oregon towards Prineville Reservoir State Park and Highway 27, which runs along the Crooked River. It is about an hour outside of Bend. Once you reach Highway 27 (Crooked River Highway), there are several campgrounds and pull-outs along the side of the road where you can stop and fish.
I recommend a guide for your first time. I used Fly and Field Outfitters located in Bend, Oregon and they were great. They rent waders and boots, and of course the fly fishing rods, reels, line, and flies. Their number is: 866-800-2812.
We stayed in the same spot for a while and then decided to make a move up the river to an area with a “magic carpet”, meaning that instead of wading over rocks and dirt, we were wading through a blanket of moss. This made it much easier to walk through the river.
Between the 3 of us, we caught about 10 rainbow trout and mountain whitefish in 3 different spots along the river.
