Hurricane Creek Campground is an excellent alternative to camping at Wallowa Lake if you are staying in the Joseph, Oregon area. It's cheap and less crowded!
Head on over to Hurricane Creek if you are looking for a great campground near Lake Wallowa. It's a forest service campground, so the fee is minimal, only $6 per night. There are no reservations, just show up, grab your spot, and pay at the kiosk. They offer three tent/trailer sites and eight tent-only sites. There are multiple vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. The sites are spaced out nicely, so you are not right next to your neighbor.
We stayed here in mid-July, and all of the campsites at Wallowa Lake were occupied, but we only had three other people staying at the Hurricane Creek Campground.
Hurricane Creek Trailhead provides access to the Eagle Cap Wilderness and loads of adventures, but it also means that black bears will roam through the campground from time-to-time, so make sure your food is in bear-safe canisters, or securely put away in your vehicle. We had a bear poke around camp while we stayed there.
Enjoy!
