About this place

Added by Breanne McNitt

There is nothing quite like ending a long day of adventure at one of the best sunset spots in Joshua Tree National Park.

Park your car at the Echo Rock Parking Area.  The trail starts next to the outhouse and heads north.  As you walk through the sand, there is a large rock pile to your right, the top of that is your destination.  Continue walking until you've reached the far north end of the rock formation and then turn right and walk along the northern end of the pile until you find a good spot to start your scramble up.

Head up the granite slab, but veer right as you do this.  Eventually you will transfer onto the face you were looking at as you walked in (the west face of the formation).  Just keep heading up using whatever path on the granite that suits you.

The top is flat, so gather your friends, grab a beverage, and enjoy the breath-taking sunset.  I suggest going on a day when there are clouds in the sky, and maybe even some rain in the distance.  If you are lucky enough (like my group was), as the sun is setting you will be able to turn around and see a rainbow arching through the sky.

After the sun has set, begin the decent back down the way you came.  Do this before it gets too dark, or make sure to pack a headlamp before leaving your car.

Perfect sunset spot.
One of the better spots to watch the sunset in Joshua Tree! Make sure to bring a jacket as it can get pretty windy ...
