Take a short walk for incredible views of the San Jacinto Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, Coachella Valley, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Mojave Desert.
Accessing Covington Flats in Joshua Tree National Park requires a high ground-clearance overland vehicle. Bring spare water and emergency tools incase of a breakdown.
From Route 62 in Yucca Valley, CA take La Contenta Dr. South toward Joshua Tree. This is a backcountry entrance that does not have a gate, but still requires a park pass. 1 miles south the paved road becomes sand and dirt and 1.9 miles further hang left onto Covington Flat Rd. After 5.8 miles make a right turn onto Covington Crossover Rd. for 1.9 miles before taking a last right onto Upper Covington Flat Rd. It's a couple more miles to the Eureka Peak parking lot.
Parking is limited but visitors are few. It is only a short walk up to Eureka Peak which offers incredible 360º views of the San Jacinto Mountains, San Bernardino Mountains, Coachella Valley, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Mojave Desert. It can be windy in the evenings. This is a quiet spot to chill above the busy life of Palm Desert on the edge of desert wilderness. Open a few Coachella Valley Brews and soak in the view.
