Great Serpent Mound

Great Serpent Mound is easy to get to, and the museum nearby has a great little shop and display on the history of the mound and how it came to be found. 

One of the many interesting features of the mound itself is that it appears to have been designed in such a way as to align itself with the pattern of the rising and setting of both the moon and the sun over the course of the year. Signs along the path on both sides of the mound indicate where both the moon and sun will rise and set over the course of the year.

Serpent Mound is also unique in that is is one of the few locations that is a known astrobleme, or better known as an ancient meteorite impact site. The bedrock surrounding the mound has been uplifted several hundred feet from the surrounding landscape, and recent studies have placed the impact at somewhere around 248 million years ago, causing any visual traces of the impact to have faded away long ago.

There is no "entry fee" to Great Serpent Mound, but parking is $8 for a vehicle and $4 for motorcycles. The historic site is open from dawn until dusk but the museums hours vary.
