About this place

Added by Dan Barr

Ansel's Cave has many a story about it: A forbidden distillery, a hideout on the Underground Railroad, and even home to a cheese factory, of all things. But one thing is for certain: it's an amazing destination hidden in the Geauga Metro Parks of Northeast Ohio.

The beginning of the hike to Ansel's Cave starts at The West Woods parking lot next to the visitor center. From there, follow the signs noting the Ansel Cave Trail.

About 1/4 mile along, the trail splits into two directions; one takes you on the more direct route to Ansel's Cave along a well maintained trail of crushed gravel; the other, a longer route on a more rugged, natural path.

Which ever path you take, you'll eventually end up at the small boardwalk overlook for Ansel's Cave, and the towering cliffs of Sharon Conglomerate that form many of the famous hiking destinations in Northeast Ohio.

While technically more of a ravine with short overhangs instead of a true cave, Ansel's Cave is still remarkable sight. As a reminder, hiking off the trail up into Ansel's Cave is forbidden by the park district. From there, simply finish the loop in either direction and return to the nature center.
