Winding along Paine Creek, Hell Hollow Wilderness Area is home to a massive stand of hemlock trees clinging to the sides of the steep cliffs. These Canadian visitors are reminders of Ohio's glacial past.
From the trailhead, follow the Beech Ridge Loop Trail to the stairs for a 1/4 mile to the stairs that descend down into Hell Hollow. The views back up the gorge of Paine Creek are beautiful, especially with the shale cliffside in view.
The stairway down into the hollow proper is steep, so be prepared for a climb back out as its the only way in or out of the hollow. Once at the bottom, the trail winds on for about 1/4 mile more until it comes to an end at the banks of Paine Creek.
The Ohio Audubon Society has the area ranked as one of its Important Bird Areas due to the usage of the park as nesting habitat and migration grounds for birds.
