About this place

Added by Tanya T

Mills River Valley Overlook is located along Blue Ridge Parkway. Situated at milepost  404.5 with an elevation of about 4,085 ft, this paved overlook offers sweeping views into the surrounding valleys on both sides of the ridgeline—rare among Parkway vantage points. This overlook is ideal for both sunrise and sunset watching, with very little tree cover to block the glow. It is also an excellent location for observing the autumn hawk migration.

History & Meaning

  • Origins: Named after William Mills, an early hunter credited with spotting the last elk in North Carolina—a poignant connection as elk are being reintroduced into the region.

Permits & Access

  • No permits needed for scenic viewing here.

  • Special use permits are only required for events or similar activities, and don’t apply to casual visits.

Parking, Pets & Biking

  • Parking: Available directly at the overlook. Vehicles must be parked in designated spaces—parking on shoulders is prohibited to protect the roadway and vegetation.

  • Pets: Dogs and other pets are welcome—must be kept on a leash (up to 6 ft) and under physical control.

  • Biking: Permitted on the roadway itself (obey speed regulations, wear reflectors, helmets, high‑visibility clothing). Biking on trails is not allowed.

Trails & Hiking Options

  • Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST): You can pick up this trail at the overlook and continue on a scenic, moderately challenging route that stretches as long as you’d like
