The Horton Grove Nature Preserve spans 708 acres and features about eight miles of interconnected trails, including a family-friendly interpretive path (“That Makes Sense”) and longer loop options that approach 7 miles. The full loop traverses diverse habitats—upland oak-hickory and mixed hardwood forests, beech slopes, loblolly pine stands, restored warm-season grasslands, and peaceful prairie openings.
No permit is required. The preserve is free to visit, open daily from dawn to dusk, year-round.
A main parking lot is located on Jock Road, marked by kiosks—this serves as the primary trailhead for the loop.
Parking there provides direct access to the Jordan, Holman, and other loops, making it ideal for starting or finishing the ~7-mile circuit.
Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on leash, and pet waste must be removed .
The preserve is best suited for hiking, trail running, and walking. There is no indication that biking is permitted—it’s designed for low-impact foot traffic and interpretive use.
The preserve is open 365 days a year, dawn to dusk, with no seasonal restrictions noted .
Trail conditions vary: most paths are shaded (good for summer), and foot-friendly with fewer roots—though some terrain may be moderate .
