About this place

Added by Outbound

Fort Fisher is a great place to take a stroll, take a hike, lay in a hammock, swim in the ocean, and revisit history. Enjoy the most lovely oak trees, six miles of beach, a hike through a salt marsh, and more!

If you're ever in Wilmington, you have got to make time to stop by Fort Fisher State Recreation Area in Kure Beach. You can either get there by driving and you can also take a ferry to it. I highly recommend this place because it offers the most beautiful views and also has a little trail for those who want to do a little hiking.

My favorite thing about Fort Fisher aside from the beach area is the Basin Trail. The Basin Trail is located right across the street from Fort Fisher SRA's parking lot which can be found at 1000 Loggerhead Rd. Keep your eyes open because the trailhead can easily be overlooked, especially on a packed day. It's a 2.2 mile out and back trail that offers you a scenic walk. The end of the trail is supposed to lead you to an observation dock offering a view of the Basin and Zeke's Island Coastal Reserve. You also have the opportunity of visiting an old WWII bunker if you like.

I went during the beginning of March so we didn't encounter many or any bugs to my knowledge, but a friend of mine went during summer and said they were surrounded by large spiders and webs and decided not to finish the trail. We were there for a shoot so we also didn't get to complete the whole hike because we needed to head out to another location, but I definitely intend to return to complete it!

Love Ft. Fisher
Absolutely love this place but never knew this trail was there. Great area to do a half-day or day trip!

Day Trip
Really nice late winter day trip. Part of the hike is really soft sand which I found difficult to walk in. I wouldn't recommend ...
